Like all of you, I have respected and observed the lock-down to do my part to help contain the Pandemic. I also wear a mask and try to practice good social distancing. I was able to continue to work from home when this all started so I consider myself very lucky.
I have watched, with great frustration, the Federal Government squander the opportunity to contain the spread of the disease with its incredible refusal to meet this challenge and form a comprehensive and cohesive national strategy to deal with the virus, and the ensuing economic crisis. The fact that the Government changed its strategy from one of containment to “harm reduction” without explicitly saying so is yet another example of a complete dereliction of leadership, leaving each state to fend for itself. My mounting anger motivated me to create an animated short to express my disdain for the current administration’s handling of the virus. I wanted to illustrate the ineptness with which they handled the early days of pandemic, and threw away the time that other countries have utilized to reduce the spread, hospitalization, and deaths caused by the disease.
Though I do use some comedy to point out the incompetence and inconsistencies of the current administration, I, in no way, wish to minimize the seriousness of the disease nor the incredible physical and emotional toll it has taken on us all. I do know people who have contracted the virus or lost friends and loved ones from it.
A little bit about the making of this video: I made it by myself during my “free time” at home, over the course of a few weeks. I first researched and found news clips of Donald Trump speaking about the Coronavirus that I edited together to lay the foundation for the short. Then, I modified a free low polygon model of Trump that I found on the web. That initial model was created by Denys Almaral (http://denysalmaral.com). I rigged it in Maya using the Quick Rig Biped Tool. I specifically chose a low-fi approach to the rigging and character animation since I have limited skill in those departments. It was playblasted in Viewport 2.0 and edited in Adobe Premiere. I created the motion graphics using Adobe After Effects and Illustrator. For music, I licensed the main track by Happy Face Music from audiojungle.net, and I used a 6 second short clip from John Williams’ “Harry Potter” soundtrack (without permission) as well. Most of the sound effects were downloaded from freesound.org and I noted the specific sound effects and where I found the others in the credits. The voice is indeed Donald Trump in his own words, edited together from various press conferences, interviews and rallies. I did my best to be accurate to the dates, numbers, and facts represented in the short. The source material for the statistics is cited in the credits at the end.
Finally, I recognize that not everyone will share my opinion. I respect your right to disagree. Disagreements are and should be a natural part of the political discourse of this country. No matter your political leanings, the message to “Please Vote” at the end applies universally.
