Medical V-Learning™ on shoulder instability. This is an anomaly which occurs when the structures which surround the Joints of Shoulder Region do not work to keep the ball of shoulder Joints within the socket causing dislocation or subluxation. Its types include polar type I (atraumatic anterior instability) alongside polar type II and III. The former involves lesions like classic Bankart and Hill-Sachs lesions. Moreover, inferior subluxation and posterior instability have been comprehensively talked about.

The shoulder instability involves both the shoulder dislocation and subluxation. The dislocation can be either posterior or anterior dislocation. The pathological classification divides shoulder instability into three main types viz polar type I, type II and type III.

The traumatic anterior instability (polar type I) involves labral detachment and posterolateral head defects in its mechanism of action. It involves various lesions like classic Bankart lesion and Hill-Sachs lesion. It can be diagnosed via certain tests like apprehension test, fulcrum and drawer test. It can be treated with arthroscopy or Bankart repair.

The type II and III involves voluntary and habitual dislocation. The atraumatic structural instability can be treated with capsular shift or arthroscopic surgery. On the other hand, the atraumatic non-structural instability can be treated with physiotherapy and regaining neuromuscular control.

Furthermore, this lecture sheds light on the inferior subluxation in conjunction with the posterior instability. The later includes acute posterior dislocation and recurrent posteriorinstability. It can be corrected via surgery, glenoid osteotomy or soft-tissue reconstruction.
