Finnish President Sauli Niinisto confirms that Finland will apply for NATO membership to “maximise” the country’s security, despite Vladimir Putin’s warning that it would be a “mistake” to do so.
Mr Niinisto said: “This is a historic day. A new era begins.”
The country is expected to submit a formal application to NATO headquarters in Brussels next week.
